Session 1: Working Together
Session 1 allows the youth to get to know each other and the facilitator. After reviewing the rules and guidelines for the program, the facilitator and youth take part in two activities including the “how you see me” headband activity as well as a "who we are" art project.
Session 2: Communication
During this session youth learn effective strategies and techniques for communication. Youth practice skills around listening to others and expressing their thoughts and feelings. This session also explores scenarios when communication can be difficult and how to achieve positive outcomes.
Session 3: Feelings
In session three, participants learn how feelings can influence communication, thoughts, and behaviors. Through group activities, worksheets and videos youth explore how people express feelings in different ways. Youth also practice how to manage their feelings when they are upset and angry.
Session 4: Decision Making
During session four, youth participate in discussions around how people make decisions. They explore the topic of peer pressure, how it can influence an individual's decisions and learn practical tips for making thoughtful decisions.
Session 5: Where am I Going?
In session five, youth discuss the importance of having goals. Through peer-led discussions, youth explore how surroundings and relationships can influence an individual's goals. Participants identify personal goals for the future including careers paths they may want to have when they are older.
Session 6: Goal Setting
During this session, participants talked about the importance of setting goals. Youth discussed their long term goals and short term goals. The youth identify goals they have for themselves and make plans to accomplish this goal.
Session 7: Sex, Sexuality, and Gender
During session seven, the DFY facilitator leads a discussion about sex, sexuality, gender, and abstinence, including the reasons people may have sex. Participants discuss how past experiences, sexuality (gay, straight, bisexual, etc.) and gender (male, female, transgender etc.) might influence someone's decisions to have sex or be abstinent.
Session 8: Our Bodies
During session 8 youth learn about male and female reproductive organs and discuss what happens in the body during sex that can lead to pregnancy. Participants also learn about what happens in a woman's body after she is pregnant. This session includes a facilitator lead discussion around making a decision to have sex, why some people choose to have protected sex, and why others decide to have unprotected sex.
Session 9: Responsible Sex and Contraception
During session 9 participants discuss responsible sexual behavior and protecting themselves and their partners from unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Through a group discussion, youth talk about what responsible sex means for them and well as learn about birth control and contraceptive options.
Session 10: Exploring Relationships
During session 10 the youth talk about the different types of relationships including friends, family, and sexual/ romantic partners. The participants identify what they want from each type of relationship. Discussion also includes the important qualities to look for in sexual/ romantic partners. Session 10 includes a role-playing activity where youth learned how to talk about sex with their sexual/ romantic partners.
Session 11: HIV and STDs
During this session youth learn about the infections and illnesses that can be passed from one partner to another during sexual contact. Participants also learn about behaviors that put individuals at greater risk of contracting STDs and the importance of using protection to protect themselves and their partners from contracting STDs. At the conclusion of the session youth learn about the safest way to use and put on condoms.
Session 12: Bringing it all Together
This is the last DFY session of DFY Take Charge!. During this session participants review each of the 11 previous summaries, ask questions, practice with their peers and share their intentions moving forward.
